A Realistic Timeline for Homeowners One of the first questions homeowners ask is how long their room will be out of action. The honest answer is that the tiling itself is often the quickest part. Preparation, drying and curing times set the real pace of a job, and rushing them is the most common reason tiles crack or come loose. This guide walks through each stage so you know what to expect and why a good tiler will not skip any of them. Request a Free Estimate ## What decides how long a tiling job takes Every job is different, but the same factors set the timeline. The size of the area matters, though less than people expect. The condition of the walls or floor matters more: removing old tiles, levelling an uneven floor or replacing damaged plasterboard can add days before a single new tile goes on. The tile itself changes the pace too. Large-format tiles need a perfectly flat base and careful handling. Small mosaics, herringbone and other patterns need far more cuts. Natural stone needs sealing. Mitred edges, where tile edges are cut at 45 degrees to meet cleanly without trim, take considerably longer than fitting a plastic or metal edge. Finally, the materials have minimum drying and curing times set by their manufacturers. Levelling compound, tanking membranes, adhesive and grout all need time before the next stage can start. ## Stage one: survey, choice and ordering Before work starts, the area is measured, the substrate is checked and the layout is planned so cuts fall in sensible places. Tiles are then ordered with an allowance for cuts and breakages. Lead times on tiles vary with the supplier, so it is worth choosing early, particularly for natural stone or specialist ranges. ## Stage two: strip-out and preparation If old tiles are coming off, removal often takes a day for a typical bathroom, and longer if they are fixed to sound plaster that has to be made good afterwards. Floors may need overboarding with tile backer board to stop flexing, or a levelling compound that must dry before tiling. In bathrooms, showers and wetrooms, this is also when waterproofing goes on. A tanking system usually needs at least one coat to dry before the next and before tiles are fixed. This stage is invisible once the job is finished, but it is what stops water reaching the walls and floor beneath. Preparation commonly accounts for a third or more of the total time on a job. It is the stage most worth paying for, because it decides how long the tiling lasts. ## Stage three: fixing the tiles With a sound, flat and dry base, the tiles go on. A straightforward bathroom wall in standard-sized tiles moves quickly. A floor in large-format porcelain, a herringbone pattern or a room with lots of pipes, windows and corners takes longer because of the cutting involved. Adhesive needs to set before tiles can be walked on or grouted. Many standard adhesives need around 24 hours, while rapid-setting products can allow grouting the same day. The right choice depends on the tile, the substrate and whether underfloor heating is involved. ## Stage four: grouting, sealing and finishing Grouting is usually done once the adhesive has set, followed by cleaning off the grout haze. Silicone goes into internal corners and around baths, trays and basins, where movement would crack rigid grout. Natural stone and some unglazed tiles are sealed before and after grouting. Grout and silicone also need time to cure before they get wet. A shower should not usually be used for at least 24 hours after grouting, and some products recommend longer. A heated floor must be brought up to temperature slowly after tiling, following the heating and adhesive manufacturers' guidance. ## Typical timescales by room As a rough guide only, a kitchen splashback is often finished in a day or two. A small bathroom retile, with preparation, tiling and grouting, commonly takes several days. A full bathroom refurbishment, including strip-out, plumbing, electrics and tiling, usually runs over one to three weeks. A large open-plan floor depends heavily on preparation and tile size. These are broad ranges, not promises. A survey of your room is the only way to give an accurate timescale, and any honest estimate should explain what is included in it. ## Why rushing tiling costs more in the end Tiling over damp plaster, unset levelling compound or wet tanking traps moisture behind the tiles. Grouting before the adhesive has set can shift tiles out of line. Using a shower too soon can wash out uncured grout. Each shortcut saves a day and risks a repair that costs far more.
